‘Cape Doctor’, the name given by locals for the strong south-easterly wind that cools coastal areas and pumps life into most of South Africa’s vineyards, coupled with dramatic mountainous terrain, contributes to an environment allowing a broad range of styles to be created. Winemakers here are no stranger to a challenge, evident throughout 2018 with severe droughts that inevitably affected harvests. Despite this adversity, the wine scene managed to find a silver lining in that of the quality of their harvest. While production was down 15% in 2017, the quality of the fruit which found its way to the winery has got winemakers and the UK trade very excited indeed. Blended styles have also played a significant role in cementing South Africa’s role as a key global player in export markets.
